Good news AND good news!!

Hello all. Whew. It's been quite a week! We had a STOP Stupak Speak Out on Dec. 2nd and then the Gallery Rally Hop this past Saturday to collect more anti Nelson-Hatch amendment signatures (virtually identical to the Stupak amendment in the House). But the great news is: WE WON!! By vote of 54-45, the Nelson Hatch amendment was defeated. You can find how your senators voted and thank them or "spank" them (voice your disappointment, frustration, rage, etc.) here.

Now, we can put this mural on the front burner again!! We're still scounting locations; there are a couple of places in the Short North that may be promising for long term use BUT we will have to go through the Italian Village Commission to get anything approved to put up (and their next meeting isn't until after the New Year) so we might display it elsewhere in the meantime.

Also, we're looking for a large space that we can create this mural in. Anyone that knows of place that would for (messy) mural creation, should let me know: columbusmural@gmail.com

Stay tuned!

Whew!!

What a weekend!! I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving/break from work. I don't know about you but I'm getting reared up to work on this mural. We're still in the process of deliberation. (A lot of our energy is being directed towards fighting off this Stupak amendment and trying to keep a likewise occurrence from happening in the Senate.)

Anyways, I promise promise PROMISE that we'll get to this soon. Next week hopefully...
In the meantime, enjoy some of these other wonderful murals and envision how awesome ours will look!!

*This last one is super large...ours will not take up the entire side of a building BUT it will still rock!!

Last Two!

Hey all! These are the last two submissions. It's taken me longer than I thought to get to this because we at Planned Parenthood are really busy trying to turn this whole Stupak mess around. If you're interested you can find out more info here.

Anyhow, this first one is by Laura Smales.

And the final submission is by Sally Louise Polk (she added a note to imagine the background as hot pink.)

Super!! Hopefully we'll get to decide the winner next week.

Submissions!!

Here are some of the amazing submissions we've gotten!! We have two more, which I will post as soon as I get the artists' permission.

First up are two pictures by Ginny Baughman. The first one is titled "Three Mother Tree." The second one is titled "His and Her Window."

OK, these next four are by Cynthia Bellarose:

This next one is by Eddie Sergi.

And the last- but not least- image we have for now is by Meredith Lum with the text by Meredith and Sarah Lum.

Wow. These are great! I'll get the last two posted ASAP and then we'll decide on the winner sometime this week.

Deliberation, deliberation...

OK. So...we've received some GREAT submissions. Once I get the artists' permission to post their work, I'll let all you folks check out what we've got....hopefully that will be within the next couple of days. And the deliberation will be early next week.

It'll be super exciting so stay tuned!!!

One week!!!

We've got submissions in and we'll be posting them (with the artist's permission, of course) after the deadline.

And...there's one week left to submit. I want my inbox so flooded with submissions that gmail tells me I need more space. And...you not being an "artist" just won't fly here : ) In fact, I just talked to a woman today who doesn't consider herself an artist but took some painting classes in the past and was going to see what she remembered so she could submit something. NOW that is pretty frickin' awesome.

Oh, and an update: we're thinking of putting the mural on a large board and attaching it to a wall (like this mural in the Short North.) That way we can work on it indoors when it gets cold out AND the owner of the wall has a chance to see the finished product before they decide on whether or not to hang it up. But, I'm sure it'll look so sweet that they won't refuse.

Can you tell I'm psyched?? Now, get creative!!

Extended Deadline!! November 10th!!!

Hello all you crazy talented artists!!

So, we've had some people mention that they weren't given enough time for the deadline...not to mention that lots, LOTS of people are sick and artists within the student community are being swamped by mid-terms. So...we've extended the deadline to November 10th at 6:00 p.m. And none of the other guidelines have changed.

I do want to ask all of you to please pass on info to anyone that might be interested. (We figured if we're going to extend the deadline then we might as well publicize the heck out of it in the meantime.) If you know of any places that might benefit from flyers or any artist collectives, email us at
columbusmural@gmail.com and we can send you a fancy-schmancy flyer to post or hand out.

Huzzah!! Let's keep this going.

Less than a week left to submit!!

Hello all you lovely artists!

There is less than a week left to submit for the mural. Submissions are due next Monday (October 26th) by 6 p.m.

Also, we're still scouting for locations. When we get a better idea, we'll post some pictures of prospective locatons. Or...if you know of owners of buildings around who are dying for a wonderful mural, let us know. You can email us at
columbusmural@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing what you've got!

Call for artists!!

OK. So here's the situation: Planned Parenthood is sponsoring a women's empowerment mural and wants female artists to submit their ideas of what an empowered woman/en look like. This is an awesome chance to contribute to the community by creating an inspiring mural. It may be seen by people generations from now!

How does it work?? Well, you'll submit up to two images by the deadline (October 26th at 6:00 pm) and a committee of the mural's organizers and the owners of the wall will vote on what they feel is the best representation of women's empowerment. You'll find the guidelines for submission over to the right side of the screen. ---- >

So...what does female empowerment mean to you? How do race/ethnicity and class intersect with female empowerment? How does empowerment look when traced from generation to generation? Still stuck? The following quotes may help gear you towards a more specific idea (but you don't have to use them.)

“Women are not inherently passive or peaceful. We're not inherently anything but human.” Robin Morgan

"As we strive to be conscious human beings, we situate ourselves more and more as agents of history. The moment we reject being objects, we begin to be the subjects of our desires." Inés Hernández Avila

Have a better idea? If yes, then great! If not, just use whatever comes to your mind when you think about empowerment, whether it be in your own life or the lives of other women. Onward and upward!!

AND- if you're not interested in submitting a design but want to help, we will need painters. The location is still to be determined (we're working on it, and as soon as we find the perfect spot, we'll make a post) so needless to say the actual painting day is too. But we're thinking it will be sometime in mid to late November. (Don't worry, we'll stay warm with heaters and cider.) If you have any questions, email us at: columbusmural@gmail.com

Oh, and who are we? Well, some of us are fellow artists, some of us are from Planned Parenthood, and all of us are super passionate about making a mural by women, geared towards what real women are.

Stay tuned!
